Day 117: Troll Quotes

Day 117’s assignment was “Go out of your way. Travel somewhere you wouldn’t normally go today specifically to create something inspired by that location.”

Today I was going to adventure to the library so I decided to put something funny in one of the books. Continue reading

Day 95: Not a Shakespearean quality sonnet

Day 95: “Ask a stranger for a suggestion of what to do today. Explaining what you’re up to is part of the experience! Bonus: Get them involved in the actual thing you make.”

It is kind of hard to explain to a perfect stranger what am I doing. The few times I have tried I’ve gotten blank stares and then an incredulous look like “Why are you wasting your time with that.” Clearly I have not been surrounded by creative types lately. :/

Instead, I asked a friend for a suggestion; she thought I should do a ds106 assignment I haven’t done before.

The opportunity to do this day’s assignment arose yesterday when I found a poem I wrote in my English class in 10th grade. It was supposed to be in the style of a Shakespearean sonnet. I decided I would record myself reading it for Audio Assignment84: “Record yourself reading from a diary/journal/letter you wrote when you were a teenager. Try to capture the emotion and angst of the moment. Add music and sound effects, as appropriate.”

Day 70: 2011 Gasoline Consumption Infographic

Day 70’s assignment was: “Work only with numbers today. You could make an image using numbers, make something into number shapes, do something involving a calculator, or…?

Every time I get gas for my Honda Civic, I always write down how much money I spent, the # of gallons I got, price per gallons, and the mileage so that I can figure out my MPG. I tallied my results from 2011 and these are the results: Continue reading

Day 60: Bad Photo, Vintage Effect & Helvetica challenge

Day 60’s assignment was: ” Make something that casts a shadow and document only the shadow.”

After procrastinating on this assignment, I finally dragged my friend’s sister into posing with me for a shadow photo. Then, since all the photos were kinda terrible, I decided to do Visual Assignment 52 where you take a bad photo, add a vintage effect and then add a silly phrase in helvetica.

I edited the photo  in Pixlr (amazing free photo editing website!) then asked my friend for suggestions for a phrase to use.  One of them is slightly negative and the other one is more positive. I couldn’t decide which one I liked more so I ended up posting both:

Day 43: First attempt at Gif Making!

Day 43’s assignment was: “Learn something new. Ask a friend to help you do something using a technique or skill they’re good at.”

Time to make my first gif! I turned to the #DS106 tutorial and downloaded a few programs (like Gimp) to make it work. I also asked Megan Mc to help since she is “The Emeril of Gif-making.”

She had a few suggestions for me about making this and while I am happy it wasn’t as hard as I thought ( definitely time consuming tho) I don’t understand why the quality is so terrible. All the images were fine pre-giffing and now it’s so blurry… >.<

Megan and I messed with the gif and tried to see if we could solve the problem, but no dice. Anyone out there have a suggestion on how to fix the quality?

Valentine’s Day Caption Challenge for #ds106

I was in Urban Outfitters the other day and stumbled across a postcard pack labeled “Unbridled Passion” by Franco Accornero.

It’s a collection of 30 different postcards from an artist who has painted more than 5,000 romance novel covers (as well as westerns, thrillers and sci-fi books). The postcards are really ridiculous on their own, but I thought for this Valentine’s day I would make them even funnier but adding my own captions.

That’s where the 2012 Valentine’s Day Caption Challenge for #ds106 comes into play: I challenge you to  make your own captions for these postcards! Not only will you help make V-Day funny, but you will also be completing DesignAssignment61.

All of these postcards can be found un-altered on my flickr account (download them and get to work!)

Day 30: Seven Deadly Sins- Greed

Day 30: “Play time. Work with toys: If you don’t have any, borrow some from a friend with kids, and maybe even work with the kids!”

For this assignment I was inspired by Colleen and her Visualassignment97: Using a Barbie, take a picture of a scene with 1 or more Barbies demonstrating one of the Seven Deadly Sins: Lust, Greed, Wrath, Sloth, Gluttony, Pride, and Envy.

I have no idea where my barbies are, but I do have some trolls that I bought for some projects last year.

Troll Invasion

I decided that for this project I wanted to focus on Greed.

2011 recap & 2012 resolutions

2011 was a crazy year.

I graduated from college and had many crazy adventures in the US with international friends!

In 2011 I visited 23 states

In my entire life I have been to 32 out 50 states in the US

Most importantly, I took DS106 in my final school semester. DS106 has changed my life. I say this not because all of the internet skills I learned through this class, but because of my 365 photo a day project I started. I’ve been working on this project since Jan 31,2011 and only have a month left to go.

Out of all my resolutions for 2011, taking a photo everyday has been the only one I have kept.  The key here was determination and so far I’ve done an amazing job of sticking with it.

Now it’s 2012. What’s the plan for the new year you might ask? I have a lot of things up in the air right now, but two things are certain:

1) I want to travel as many new places/countries as possible this year

2) I am starting a new year long project based on the book “365: A Daily Creativity journal” by Noah Scalin.** Every day for a year I will be creating something new based on the daily prompts from the book. I’ve already kickstarted the year with by making this:

Two of my friends are supposed to be doing this project alongside with me as well (Katherine and Marieke) so I am excited that I am not going into this year long project alone.

As for other “resolutions” I ideally want to try blogging at least once a week. Once DS106 was over I’ve definitely slacked on the blogging and I’ve come to realize that I miss it. Also, I think I might want to keep up with a photo a day for a year. Now of course I am going to be taking a photo everyday of my 366 (because of leap year) creativity journal project, but it would be nice to continue taking photos of things outside of this.

I don’t know what’s going to happen in 2012, but I do know it’s going to be an creatively interesting year!

**SIDE NOTE: Noah Scalin’s 365 day project involved creating a skull a day. He did an amazing job on this project and if the things that I can create this year are a quarter as good as his, then I will be happy!

This is one of my favorites from his project :
