Day 18: Crafting a Skull

Day 18’s assignment:  “Work with the things you find in your (or a friend’s car if you don’t have one).”

Luckily today I ended up waiting in the car for a while before a doctor’s appointment. After rooting around for a bit I managed to find an unused dog bag.

I played around with various ideas then  decided to put a water bottle inside to give it a shape. I finished it off by using a pen to make some eye sockets.

The finished product:

Day 17: Eye Spy

Day 17’s assignment: “Make something inspired by and/or that goes over and eye (yours or someone else’s)”

First thoughts: Clearly I am going to make an eyepatch today! Hmmm.. what materials should I use for this…

Later that day: Or maybe I should do some crazy eye makeup on me or a friend……

Much, Much later that day: Or maybe I will make Harry Potter Nerd Glasses out of cardboard and then spray paint it tomorrow…

Well into I-should-be-asleep time: I am going to make a mask!  1) Find Mask templates based on the Stravaganza books by Mary Hoffman 2) Print it out and color it in 3) glue to cardboard and cut it out 4) Coerce sibling into modeling for me.

Voila!

Day 16: Potato Print Cards

Day 16’s assignment was: “Make a unique print by cutting up a potato or sponge, and use it to stamp on a material of your choice. ”

If I had ever done a potato print, it’s been eons ago. So I decided to carve up the potato in a few simple shapes: heart & smiley faces (thanks to my sister who helped me with these ones).

Then I dug out some paint supplies and got to work making my own cards to send to friends.

For the background color I used a sponge. Then once the background dried, I added the potato stamp. Now this could be tricky because one jostling movement could ruin the entire card.

Out of the seven or so that I made these are my favorites:

Now... who will I send this to? 😛

This first one came about by accident when I didn’t space my hearts evenly enough. From there it was a matter of thinking how could I fix this problem and then deciding the last heart looks lonely. Since it was forever alone, it stood to reason he was in the friendzone.

For this next one I decided I wanted to have a lot of angry smilies and one happy smiley. Since my sister is a fan of saying “Don’t drink the haterade!” I thought it would be appropriate for this card.

I like the simplicity of this. No captions needed.

Day 15: If George Washington was a pirate

Day 15’s assignment was:  “What can you do with a just a dollar? Use a dollar bill as your medium or inspiration today. ”

Since I had done origami for Day 3 I decided that today I would have to do something different.

During my Chasing Summer trip a few months ago, I went to a bar in Key West whose walls were covered from floor to ceiling in defaced dollar bills.

Hundreds upon hundreds of dollars lay within grasp, however they were totally worthless. It was a cool idea, but also seemed like such a waste just to scrawl a name on there or something like “Vegans Rule”.

I decided that if I was going to deface a dollar bill today, I might as well make it funny (Also, I was inspired by a 9gag.com post)

After a visit to Crime and Punishment earlier today, I modeled George Washington after a buccaneer. Of course, he needed a catchphrase to go with his amazing moustache…

Day 14: I’m Like So Blonde gets a new Favicon

Day 14’s Assignment was: ” Make something microscopic. How small can you work? Can you make something that requires a magnifying glass microscope to see?”

What popped in my head almost instantly was the idea of changing my favicon. My favicon* for the past year had been a yellow crown, which I chose for several reasons including that I couldn’t think of anything better.

Favicon= the small picture in the corner next to the URL

For this year’s favicon, I wanted to make something that better reflected my website/ purpose of blogging.  After casting around a bunch of ideas, I decided to head to the Noun Project for some inspiration.

My eyes landed on the camera and I decided that fit perfectly. I am photo nerd and have almost finished my 365 photo a day project (Only 17 days left!) I decided to make the background a yellow color to reflect the blondness of my site. Then I made the center green because I have green eyes (It’s all about ME ME ME on here… 😛 )

And after using my tutorial I wrote (totally had forgotten how I did it last time), I now have a new favicon. I definitely like it more than the crown, but still haven’t decided if this is THE ONE  that I want forever.

Day 11: May I never lose my left hand

Day 11 assignment was: “Work on the other hand. Pick a medium you’re comfortable with, then work with your nondominant hand.”

I am part of the lovely minority who uses my left hand to write, which meant that today I would have to use my right hand.  In the past for fun I’ve attempted using my right hand to write things but quickly gave up. (How do you righties do it?)

Since taking a photo with my right hand today isn’t that challenging, I decided instead to color something from the “Sea Life Stained Glass Coloring Book” by Llyn Hunter. This way it would be difficult, but not totally impossible to do.

Let me tell you, coloring with my right hand was painful! Two minutes in coloring my sheet and my hand already started cramping.  Over the course of time in which I spent coloring the front and back of the sheet, I had to shake out my hand at least a hundred times.

Every time I picked up a different color marker and put it to the page, I’d realize I had put it in the wrong hand and would have to switch. Normally coloring in something is a mindless task, but this took a lot of mental effort  to not take the easy way out and use my left hand.

It also took a lot longer to color this page in with my right hand then it would if I had used my left.

This was definitely an interesting assignment and it  reminded  me that while I would be upset if I lost one of my hands in a freak accident, I would be even more annoyed if it was my left hand!

The final result of all my suffering:

Shine on through

My friend decided she wanted to have it for her car

Day 10: The Watery Grave

Day 10’s assignment was : “Use only water as your medium or inspiration today.”

Due to various events this day I waited until the last possible minute to create something for the assignment. Which, consequently meant that I wasn’t thinking clearly when I decided to balance my camera on top of a water glass to get a photo.

Camera + Glass of Water= Watery Grave.

My face when my camera plunged into the water looked something like Day 9’s assignment:

WHAT HAVE I DONE?!

NOOOOOOO

And of course my backup camera works only half the time I try to use it.

All in all, today’s assignment was looking to turn out super crappy. The photos I got were laughable like the image below.

Totally Crappy

But, thanks to the power of photoshop/ picnik I managed to turn out a somewhat interesting photo….

Evil Eye

This photo was made in Picnik by  doing several edits such as adding a watery texture, changed the hue/saturation, as well as adding in the eye.

Monster Eye

I know I could do a lot more with these photos, but for now I am content to put the memory of drowning my camera behind me. I am attempting to rescitate it, but I don’t know if I will have any luck.

Day 8: The day I destroyed a book & discovered the theme of my 366 day project.

Day 8 assignment was: “Transform an old book into something new by cutting, folding, gluing and so on.”

Now at first I was slightly horrified. Destroy a book?  Impossible!!

But then I thought about this book on Degas I had rescued from my grandma’s house in August when it was about to be donated.

I could not get a photo of this without me in the photo... :/

It was filled with many of Degas’ great paintings and I thought it would cool to use these prints as part of an art project. So I kept the book, waiting for the right time to rip into it.

Today was that day.  It was weird at first, cutting into a book, but after a while it became a lot of fun. I ended up saving most of paintings found in the book, only leaving those I  didn’t like as much. I even ended up reading more of the book than expected as well.

The book was torn apart in half.

Once I cut out everything I wanted I had to decide what I wanted my project of the day to be.

all the clips

I ended up making a college out of 1 1/2 paintings

This is my thought process for this piece. The woman is trapped in a box, the box called “her life right now.” Outside of it, there’s a lot brighter/ more interesting world that isn’t exactly perfect. Will she ever break free of  her life right now and explore a world that offers much more potential for her?

I am probably going to finish this piece by mounting it to blank paper so I can write a letter on the back of it and send it off.

Which leads me to the theme of this 366 day project: Mail.

I love mail. I love writing letters & postcards and receiving them in turn. A lot of my projects thus far have been things revolving around mail/letters and I want to continue this pattern by making it my general project theme. I want most of my projects to be something that I can send to other people, so that it’s not something that is just going to pile up around my house. Also, I am always looking for new cards to send to people, so now I can just make my own.

Day 7: Graffiti Art

Day 7’s activity was “One week down! See how fast it goes? Today, make a stencil and use it in your work.”

I started off with trying to make an elaborate stencil, but realized my paper cutting abilities leave much to be desired. Instead, I ended up making a stencil that said “Got Mail” with the help of my sister.

By the time we finished making the stencil it was getting rather late so I decided to put off using it until the next day. Again, another 2-day project. Oh well.

I had just finished writing at super long letter to one of my friends overseas (22 pages) and I realized that I needed a bigger envelope to send it in. I decided to use my stencil to decorate the envelope.

i

And since that turned out well I decided I wanted to decorate the front of the envelope too. I dug out a stencil that my friend Natalie had given me as part of my 19th birthday gift.

All in all, I loved doing Day 7 assignment! But, of course, who doesn’t like making art with spray paint? ; )

Day 3: adventures in Origami

365creativityjournal ‘s assignment for day 3 was: “Make something out of paper, but don’t use scissors or glue or draw on it. What now?”

Of course, the first thing that sprung to my mind was origami. My friend KKY had given me a bunch of origami paper about a year earlier after I said I wanted to learn how to make paper cranes. I had never really used the paper so now would the perfect opportunity to do so.

I headed over to my friend Aitak’s house where we proceeded to start folding. I quickly learned that I suck at origami. I really do. Somehow all the folding I have to do confuses my brain because the only origami I was actually able to do was the paper hearts and the cup.  Level: So easy a five year old could do it…

The paper crane was unquestionably way too hard for someone with my skill level and even creating a 3-D box was impossible too. I tried 3 different times to make that box and somehow I managed to mess up every time! :/

Why so impossible?! (Aitak's amazing box)

All in all, it was an interesting day, but obviously I need a lot more practice before I can declare myself an origami master.

At the end, just for fun, Aitak and I did an experiment to see how long it would take for the origami boxes to burn (I also thought it would a cool photo opportunity).

An experiment

Actually these things were really hard to burn/took a while…
